Health benefits from smoking cessation equals to several medications
The estimated lifetime treatment benefit of smoking cessation was comparable to the use of several pharmaceutical treatments combined, even when the analysis was limited to major CV events, demonstrated by a recent study by a team of researchers led by Dr Tinka J. van Trier, a doctoral student at Amsterdam University Medical Centre. The findings were presented in an abstract at European Society of Cardiology’s ESC Preventive Cardiology 2022. The researchers found that smoking cessation was associated with a 4.81-year gain in event-free years among CV patients, whereas persistent smoking with maximal pharmaceutical treatment resulted in a comparable gain of 4.83 event-free years.
