MRI scans of COVID-19 patients may help in the study of long-term brain changes

Although most COVID-19 patients recover quickly, the long-term consequences for the brain are unknown. MRI scans might aid in the investigation of extended COVID syndrome. The study compared brain activity and connectivity in 35 COVID-19 patients 6 months after hospitalization to 36 healthy controls using fMRI images. In the recovered COVID-19 patients, the scans revealed abnormalities in both local brain activity and connections between distant brain areas. When compared to controls, recovered patients exhibited stronger activity in the occipital and temporal lobes but reduced activity in the frontal lobes. They also showed some unusual connection patterns across areas with different levels of activity. Furthermore, several of the aberrant brain alterations were linked to clinical variables.
