Fresh threat of immune escape by SARS CoV-2 as new variant B.1.640.2 detected in South France

Scientists at the Institute of IHU Mediterranee Infection in South France have detected a new variant of coronavirus B.1.640.2,  currently called ‘IHU’, in 12 people tested positive for Covid-19. These people reportedly travelled from the African country Cameroon to France. The primary reports from the Institute says the new strain has at least 47 mutations and about 37 deletions in its genetic formation as compared to SARS CoV-2, the orginal variant. As the scientists are still studying the details of how the newly detected variant is going to behave as far as infectivity and transmission are concerend, the worries of immune escape are looming large within the medical world.
