Psoriasis strongly associated with risk of developing gout

The latest research by a team of scientists at Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, Taiwan, identified a positive link between psoriasis and risk of developing gout, urging medical practitioners to evaluate psoriasis patients for incidental gout. The research included 1 million people, who were followed for 14 years, to find that the incidence densities of gout in the psoriasis and non-psoriasis cohorts were 6.96 and 5.09 per 1000 person-years. The researchers said that the strength of association increases with risk factors such as male sex, older age, hypertension, and COPD, though the biological mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear.
