International Brain Tumor Awareness Week: Here are the things which you must know
International Brain Tumor Awareness Week is observed during the last week of October. International Brain Tumor Awareness Week spreads awareness about brain tumor, the challenges faced and need of increased research effort. It is organized by the International Brain Tumor Alliance(IBTA). Throughout the Week, brain tumor patients, families and supporters from all corners of the world mobilize by holding events such as walks, lunches, afternoon teas, information displays and many other activities.
One of the longest standing awareness week events takes place in Mumbai, India, where the Tata Memorial Hospital and the Brain Tumor Foundation of India hold their Annual Art Festival for children with brain tumors. More than 300 families and friends come together to support and encourage their children’s artistic talents.
A brain tumor is a collection, or mass, of abnormal cells in your brain. Your skull, which encloses your brain, is very rigid. Any growth inside such a restricted space can cause problems. Brain tumors can be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign).
A tumor in the brain can cause huge, irreversible damage. And treatment that may be life-saving can cause devastating collateral damage. This is particularly pertinent in children, whose brains are still developing and who must carry the burden of any disabilities and health problems through their whole lives.
Brain tumors are the most common cancer among children, and the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under the age of 40. However, because they represent less than 1.8% of all cancers diagnosed worldwide, brain tumors don’t have the same level of public awareness as more common cancers. COVID-19 has forced changes to the format of many of the International Brain Tumor Awareness Week events from in-person to digital platforms, or in some cases, forced their postponement or cancellation.
Several methods are currently being tested in clinical trials. Oncolytic virus therapy. This therapy uses a virus that infects and destroys tumor cells, sparing healthy brain cells. It is currently being researched as a treatment for brain tumors.
