Omicron surge in major Indian cities pushing govts to impose serious curbs

Large cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and others in India have recorded a big spike in Covid-19 cases, particularly the Omicron driven surge, on Friday, indicating community level spread of the virus. The alarming rise in the virus spread has forced almost all these cities to introduce new restrictions, especially bans on the new year celebrations. Mumbai, which registered as many as 3,700 new cases of SARS CoV-2 infection in the last 24 hours, saw its beaches, open grounds, sea faces, promenades, parks and other public places closed on new year’s eve. Delhi, with 1,313 new Covid cases — the highest single-day spike since the peak of the second wave in May, has banned all celebratory gatherings in public places and restaurants. Kolkata, Gurgaon, Kochi and several other cities have also seen resurgence of infection by Delta as well as an alarming rise of Omicron driven coronavirus cases, pushing the local authorities to take precautionary steps.
