NATIONAL EPILEPSY DAY: All You Need to Know About The Condition

November 17th observed as the NATIONAL EPILEPSY DAY. Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder that causes  ‘seizures’ or ‘fits’. Seizures occur due to the sudden, excessive electrical discharges in the neurons or brain cells. This type of condition can affect people at any age and each age group suffers from different problems. National Epilepsy Day celebrated by the Epilepsy Foundation and various seminars, debates, stage events, etc. are organized to educate people about the epilepsy disease and its treatment methods. Epilepsy is NOT contagious.

 

Symptoms of Epilepsy 

  • Temporary confusion.
  • A staring spell.
  • Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs.
  • Loss of consciousness or awareness.
  • Psychic symptoms such as fear, anxiety or deja vu.

 

 

Diagnosis of Epilepsy

As far as the diagnosis of epilepsy is concerned, your doctor will perform a neurological exam and some blood tests before confirming the condition. A neurological exam will help the doctor know your motor abilities and mental function. In certain cases, you may also have to go through an EEG, CT scan, MRI, or PET test.

Causes of Epilepsy 

  • A Stroke.
  • A brain tumor.
  • A severe head injury.
  • Drug abuse or alcohol misuse.
  • A brain infection.
  • Lack of oxygen during birth

Treatment

There’s no cure for epilepsy, but early treatment can make a big difference. Uncontrolled or prolonged seizures can lead to brain damage. Epilepsy also raises the risk of sudden unexplained death. The condition can be successfully managed.

The goal of Purple Day is to increase general public awareness, to reduce the social stigma endured by many individuals with the condition, and to empower individuals living with epilepsy to take action in their communities. It is said that both the color lavender and the plant have this effect on the brain. The lavender plant is in fact, is proven to act as a relaxing agent for the central nervous system.
